Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system caused widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of millions of people nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued 14 individuals stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. “A father also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials announced at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and a second individual who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon early Monday as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Researchers report that the rate of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events cause an average of US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency last week due to the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
