Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.
The former head of state was found guilty of planning a military coup in September and given more than 27 years in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending legal challenges.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.
This encompassed seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a chance to flee".
Court Filing Details Escape Concerns
In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his flight.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his son.
His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a legislator, called for a gathering of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.
The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or see it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to battle with us."
He said the vigil would be so followers could offer prayers for his health and for the return of democracy in our country."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's decision was the possibility of the former president's move to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of arranging to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.
The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the US embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is positioned around 13km from the former president's residence.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist American leader President Trump, leading him to implement a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.
Bolsonaro is being kept in a Federal Police station in the capital and will experience a detention review on Sunday.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with digital surveillance.
They also asked that Bolsonaro be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Details of Guilty Verdict
He was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the presidential race to his left-wing rival, President Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a scheme which involved plans to murder his opponent and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.
The plot was stopped because it failed to get the endorsement of the military leaders. Lula was sworn in without incident on 1 January 2023.
But a following week, on the eighth of January, thousands of his backers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, Brasília.
The law enforcement stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.
The justices found that the protesters had been provoked by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, restore order and bring him back to power.
At the moment, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.
The former president called the trial a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
