EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
